A key prototype of the gritty, morally murky police procedurals that would proliferate in the 1970s, this lean, mean urban thriller from Don Siegel stars Richard Widmark as the eponymous New York City detective, whose questionable ethics lead to clashes with his moralistic commissioner (Henry Fonda). When Madigan and his partner (Harry Guardino) lose their guns to a hoodlum in a raid gone wrong, they’re given just seventy-two hours to scour Spanish Harlem and bring the fugitive to justice.
