The Mad Phoenix tells the story of a brilliant but troubled Cantonese opera playwright, Kong Yu-Kau, who rose to fame in the 1920s and 30s with his unique and powerful works. With his pen name, Mr. Thirteen, he became known for his arrogance and eccentricity, refusing to compromise his artistic vision even in the face of changing public tastes and political turmoil. As he grew older, his behavior became more erratic, and he was eventually admitted to a mental hospital. Despite his decline, Kong's legacy as a trailblazing artist continues to inspire generations to come.
