From the very first scene, which is executed with minimal sound design and no score, Spielberg and his technical team work almost like Abel’s painting—focused, deliberate and remarkably quiet.

So godlike is Spielberg’s status that we often take his talents for granted. The strange, riveting mix of Bridge Of Spies is another sterling reminder that we shouldn’t.

What is Bridge of Spies about? Toggle content

Bridge of Spies is a historical drama film set during the Cold War. The movie follows the story of James Donovan, an insurance lawyer from Brooklyn who is appointed to defend Rudolf Abel, a Soviet spy arrested in New York City in 1957. Despite the overwhelming evidence against Abel, Donovan mounts a vigorous defense, convinced that every accused deserves a fair trial. He even risks his own safety and the safety of his family by refusing to cooperate with the CIA's attempts to induce him to violate attorney-client privilege. As the trial unfolds, Donovan becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue between the US and Soviet governments. He convinces the judge to spare Abel's life, arguing that Abel had been serving his country honorably and might be useful for future prisoner exchanges. However, Abel is sentenced to 30 years in prison. Donovan continues to fight for justice, appealing Abel's conviction to the Supreme Court based on lack of search warrant. The film takes a dramatic turn when Donovan is recruited by the CIA operative Hoffman with a new mission - to negotiate with the Soviets for the release of U-2 spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers, who had been shot down over the Soviet Union and sentenced to 10 years in prison. bridge of Spies is a gripping tale of espionage, diplomacy, and the power of principled conviction as Donovan finds himself at the center of historic events during the Cold War era.
