Richard Gere and Jodie Foster bring a stirring chemistry to this morally complex period drama, a beautifully crafted remake of the French art-house hit THE RETURN OF MARTIN GUERRE (itself based on a true story). After the Civil War, Laurel Sommersby (Foster) adjusts to life without her wealthy but cruel husband Jack, believed to have been killed in the conflict. But just when she is about to remarry, Jack (Gere) miraculously returns. He has changed so much that Laurel begins to wonder if he might be an imposter, even as she falls in love with him. But what happens when an episode from the past threatens to upset their fragile happiness?

A genuinely romantic piece of work, Sommersby features two class performances from Gere and Foster, both managing to somehow convey the depth of their mutual longing without ever having to hang from the chandeliers to prove it.
