Silence is a historical drama film directed by Martin Scorsese, based on Shūsaku Endō's novel "Silence". The film takes place in 17th century Japan, where two Portuguese Jesuit priests named Sebastião Rodrigues and Francisco Garupe travel to find their mentor Cristóvão Ferreira, who is believed to have apostatized under torture during a period of intense persecution of Christians. Along their journey, they witness the brutal treatment of Christians and are forced to confront their own faith and morality. It was released in 2016 and premiered at the Vatican City.
