The Curse of the Jade Scorpion

The Curse of the Jade Scorpion is a comedy-crime-romance movie set in 1940 New York City. Efficiency expert Betty Ann Fitzgerald and insurance investigator C.W. Briggs are both working for a company, with the former secretly dating the latter's boss, Chris Magruder. During a stage show, they are both hypnotized by a magician named Voltan, who uses the trigger words "Madagascar" and "Constantinople" to put them in a trance. C.W. is ordered by Voltan to steal jewels while under hypnosis, but he doesn't remember the crimes after waking up. He eventually notices Betty Ann's suspicious behavior and decides to investigate. Sneaking into her house, he witnesses Chris telling her that he has reconciled with his wife and will not have a divorce. Distraught, Betty Ann tries to jump out of a window but is stopped by C.W., who spends the night keeping her from killing herself. As investigations pick up evidence pointing to C.W., he is arrested but escapes to Betty Ann's place, where she grudgingly hides him. Voltan calls Betty Ann, saying "Madagascar" to put her in a trance and steal for him. In that state, the subliminal suggestion of being in love leads her to seduce C.W. Eventually, C.W.'s co-workers, George Bond and Alvin "Al," realize that the initial hypnosis is causing the robberies. George frees C.W. of the trigger word and restores his memories before they go to find Betty Ann at Voltan's site. They capture Voltan as he tries to escape, and the still-hypnotized Betty Ann expresses her love for C .W., who kisses her before erasing her memories of the event. Back at work, Chris understands if C .W .leaves and intends on forcing Betty Ann into retirement after they get married since he does not want his wife working with him there, which disturbs C .W .. C .W heads to tell Betty Ann about his resignation when the two share a parting drink, outside where Al says that he will quit if C W does, with the rest of staff hailing him as a hero; he dismisses his success as luck before George reveals that a hypnotized Betty Ann has been stealing for Voltan all along.
