Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere - Recensies

Jeremy Allen White is a convincingly tortured rock star in this smartly narrow and specific look at a particular chapter of music history

Springsteen becomes as raw and as frank as the characters in his songs.    

...at its heart, the Scott Cooper-directed drama is about the complicated relationship between a son and a father.

Cooper’s film wants to be the “Nebraska” of rock biopics, but it lacks the finesse to retain the essence of that sound when transferring it into the body of a commercial biopic.

This low-key biopic resists fireworks but showcases a vocal performance which will surely land its star an Oscar nomination.

What Deliver Me From Nowhere shows well is just how commercial success was a distant second to Springsteen – a man who had no choice but to rip those Nebraska songs from his wounded heart.

This biopic works best when its sharper focus is on a troubled thirty-something burying himself in the creation of what would become one of his most celebrated records.

Far more interested in embodying the man than imitating his image, White manages to do just as the Boss himself did with Nebraska back in ‘82: find something real in the noise.
