In 1856, Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil is trapped in a loveless marriage with Teresa Cristina, while he secretly longs for the educated and abolitionist Countess Luisa. Meanwhile, two sisters, Pilar and Dolores, face their own struggles with arranged marriages and societal expectations.
