In 1963, young Eva Bruhns, a Polish-to-German interpreter, is living with her parents in Frankfurt and working at the restaurant Deutsches Haus. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she is hired to interpret at a trial against former SS officers accused of war crimes committed at Auschwitz. Despite her parents' and fiancé's opposition, Eva accepts the job and soon realizes that she has a personal connection to the place. As she begins interpreting, Eva comes to understand the extent of the National Socialist killing machine and its impact on her own life.
