...for a series so often obsessed with the spectacle of mass death, it serves as a poignant portrayal of finding the will to live on despite everything.

The real conflict is within, as the pilot faces a simple but defining choice: to finish his kamikaze mission, or to protect and embrace the life he doesn't feel he needs.
