Dense and laborious, Bardo sometimes feels like an endurance test. Its moments of visual brilliance carry it far.

The film’s non-linear narrative may challenge our desire for familiarity and structure, but this unconventionality invites a deeper understanding of its subjects and filmmaker.

Yes, the blatantly autobiographical Bardo is acrimoniously self-indulgent. But it needs to be.

Ambitious, over-the-top, pretentious, autobiographical...

...the sheer balls of putting such a film on Netflix and demanding steamers’ attention has to be admired, as does the technical aplomb with which the dreamlike scenarios are brought to life.

As in “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” this story is told in a subjective, sometimes fanciful fashion.

It is mind-bending and doesn’t make sense but if you introspect, our minds are no different – as our thoughts go from a 0 to 100 very quickly and with no reasoning.
