The Teacher

In 1983, Czechoslovakia, a new teacher named Mária Drazdechová begins working at a suburban school near Bratislava. She quickly gains a reputation for her unconventional teaching methods, which include bullying students whose parents don't comply with her demands for favors and benefits. As the suicide attempt of one of her students sparks a crisis, the school principal calls a meeting with parents to discuss a petition to remove Drazdechová from her position. Fearing her connections to the Communist Party, most parents are hesitant to sign the petition, but some eventually change their minds and return to sign it, leading to Drazdechová's removal from the school. The film shifts to 1991, two years after the Velvet Revolution, where Drazdechová becomes a teacher again, and ends with a scene showing her asking her students about their parents' jobs, with a portrait of Václav Havel on the classroom wall.
