The Stoker

In the midst of decaying St. Petersburg Petersburg, a retired Afghan war hero named Ivan "Yakut" Matveyevich Skryabin maintains his fiery furnace while pursuing a historical novel. While local gangsters drop off fresh corpses for incineration, Ivan continues writing, and his daughter Sasha visits occasionally. However, things become complicated when Ivan's friends from the war bring corpses for disposal, and he learns that they are murderers. When Bison kills Sasha out of jealousy, Ivan kills Bison and Sergeant in retaliation before taking his own life. Vera discovers his body and completes the story he was writing, narrating it in voiceover as a black-and-white film about a Russian khailakh sent to Yakutia as punishment. The film offers a glimpse into the dark underbelly of post-Soviet Russia through the lens of a shell-shocked veteran struggling to reconcile his past and present.
