A young man, Jim Halsey, on a mission to deliver a car from Chicago to San Diego, encounters a mysterious hitchhiker named John Ryder in the middle of a deserted road. Ryder forces himself into Jim's car and reveals his psychopathic nature by threatening him with a switchblade. Jim manages to shove Ryder out of the moving car, but the nightmare doesn't end there.
