Frequently asked questions
What is Newton about?
In the jungles of central India, Newton Kumar, a rookie government clerk on reserve duty, is entrusted with conducting free and fair elections despite the apathy of security forces and the looming fear of guerrilla attacks by communist rebels. Disappointed by the lack of voter turnout, Newton desperately tries to educate the villagers about the importance of voting, but to no avail. When a foreign reporter arrives at the polling station, the CRPF forces the villagers to cast their votes, but they are clueless about the voting machine and its operation. Frustrated, Aatma Singh, the Assistant Commandant, takes matters into his own hands and shames the villagers into voting. However, Newton realizes that the villagers are voting for their favorite symbol, rather than politicians they have never heard about, leading to a conundrum of truth. Determined to fulfill his duty as an election officer, Newton steals Aatma Singh's rifle and holds him at gunpoint until the villagers cast their votes. The movie concludes with a shot of the area six months later showing mining activity
