In the early 20th century, a young woman named Xiao Yuegui is sold into a Shanghai brothel, where she catches the eye of the powerful gang leader Chang Lixiong. After his assassination, Xiao Yuegui flees to the countryside and gives birth to a daughter. Years later, she returns to Shanghai and rises to fame as a theater performer, all while struggling to come to terms with her sordid past and her love for Huang Peiyu, who was involved in her husband's murder. As she navigates the treacherous world of Shanghai's criminal underworld, Xiao Yuegui must confront her demons and decide where her loyalties truly lie.
