Kobayashi deconstructs the samurai way. His tale about honour, unfolding slowly and assuredly, is thoughtful and memorable, framings as beautiful as always. I very much appreciate that he keeps his actors restrained.

Den eneste film der konkurrerer med "De Syv Samuraier" om at være verdens bedste 'seriøse' samurafilm. Mesterværk!

What is Harakiri about? Toggle content

In feudal Japan, a down-on-his-luck samurai named Tsugumo Hanshirō arrives at the estate of the prosperous House of Iyi, seeking permission to commit ritual suicide within their courtyard. The senior counselor for the Iyi clan, suspecting Hanshirō's motives, tells him a story about another ronin who made the same request. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that honor and respect are not always what they seem. Will Hanshirō follow through with his plan or will he discover a new path forward?
