My Man Godfrey

My Man Godfrey is a classic screwball comedy film that follows the story of Godfrey, a homeless man living in a Hooverville during the Great Depression, who is hired as a butler by a wealthy socialite family, the Bullocks. The film stars William Powell as Godfrey and Carole Lombard as Irene Bullock, the ditzy debutante who hires Godfrey and falls in love with him. The movie begins with Godfrey living with other homeless men at a New York City dump by the East River. One night, Cornelia Bullock, the spoiled and arrogant sister of Irene, offers Godfrey $5 to be her "forgotten man" for a scavenger hunt. Godfrey refuses and makes Cornelia fall on a pile of ashes, much to the delight of Irene. Godfrey then offers to go with Irene to help her beat Cornelia and satisfy his curiosity regarding their scavenger hunt. At the Waldorf-Ritz Hotel, Godfrey is authenticated as a "forgotten man" and Irene wins that part of the hunt. Godfrey publicly expresses his contempt for the players' antics before leaving in a huff. Feeling guilty and impressed by Godfrey's wit and intelligence, Irene decides to make him her protégé and hires him as the new family butler. As the story progresses, Godfrey proves to be up to the challenge of being the butler despite the female Bullocks' antics. However, he faces challenges from Cornelia who holds a grudge against him and Irene who becomes infatuated with him. Godfrey tries to discourage Irene's advances but she kisses him, causing him to outline the boundaries of their employee-employer relationship. Eventually, Godfrey's past is revealed when he is recognized by his longtime friend Tommy Gray at a tea party thrown by Irene. Godfree makes up a story that he was Tommy's valet at Harvard, but things get complicated when Irene announces her engagement to a surprised Charlie Van Rumple. The engagement eventually falls through and Irene confesses her love to Godf rey who puts her in the shower turns on cold water only for her to confess that she knows he loves her because he lost his temper. Godfey quits his job as butler before he leaves, Mr, Bullock throws Carlo out (literally) tells his family that jis business is in dire straits, and he will likely go to jail puplicly. However, godfey provides good news: He had realized Mr. BUllocks situation, sold short ,using some of teh money raised y pawning cornelias pearl necklace tog buy up the stocks..
