In the year 2009, the wealthy elite have discovered a way to achieve immortality by transferring their minds into new bodies, snatched from the past just before death. Alex Furlong, a race car driver, is one such "freejack," but he manages to escape his captors and flee into the dangerous streets of New York City. With the help of his former fiancée Julie, now an executive at the powerful McCandless Corporation, Alex must evade the ruthless mercenary Victor Vacendak and the corporation's police force as they try to capture him and transfer his mind into a new body. But as Alex and Julie navigate their dangerous world, they discover that the cost of immortality may be higher than they ever imagined.
