Frequently asked questions
What is Detroit about?
Detroit, a gripping drama inspired by true events, recounts the horrifying story of the 1967 civil unrest in Detroit, Michigan. On July 23rd, a police raid on an unlicensed club sparked one of the largest citizens' uprisings in US history. As chaos erupted throughout the city, a group of young black men and two white women sought refuge in the Algiers Motel. Tragically, their sanctuary became a scene of unimaginable horror when police officers burst in and began a rampage of beatings, killings, and mock executions. The film's protagonist, Melvin Dismukes, a private security guard who witnessed the atrocities firsthand, found himself caught up in the investigation that followed. Detroit shines a light on one of America's darkest moments: an event that left three young black men dead and countless others brutalized by those sworn to protect them. Through raw and powerful performances from its all-star cast - including John Boyega as Melvin Dismukes - director Kathryn Bigelow masterfully captures both the fear and fury that permeated Detroit during those five days in July 1967.
