The film is set in São Paulo's Carandiru Penitentiary, one of Latin America's largest and most violent prisons, where inmates are crammed into tiny cells and violence is a constant presence. Despite the grim conditions, the prisoners have formed their own community, with its own rules and codes of conduct.
