In 1981, New York City, Abel Morales, a ruthless immigrant entrepreneur, is determined to expand his heating oil business and fulfill his version of the American Dream. However, his ambition is hindered by the widespread corruption and violence that plagues the city during this particularly dangerous year. Morales's trucks are repeatedly hijacked, and his drivers are brutally attacked. Despite pressure from his wife Anna to fight back with violence, Abel refuses to resort to illegal means. The Assistant District Attorney is investigating Morales's company for suspected price-fixing and tax evasion in the heating oil industry. In a desperate attempt to secure a lucrative deal for a fuel oil terminal on the East River, Morales agrees to purchase it for $1.5 million with a large down payment but soon realizes that he may lose everything due to impending criminal indictments and increased violence from rivals who want in on the deal as well as an investigation by Hasidic Jews headed by Joseph Mendelsohn into possible wrongdoings within said business venture which led them all into making decisions they otherwise wouldn't have taken such drastic measures over this matter at hand today here now currently speaking about current events happening currently right now at this moment!
