Adela, the eldest, takes charge, while Blanca struggles with her engagement to a wealthy banker and her feelings for her brother-in-law. Diana is determined to prove herself as the enterprising sister, Francisca dreams of singing for a wider audience, Celia desires to continue her education and writing, and Elisa, the youngest, is spoiled and irascible. As they work to keep their father's business afloat, they face the societal pressures of a world where women have no right to vote.
