What is Workhorse Queen about? Toggle content

"Workhorse Queen" is a documentary that follows the journey of Ed Popil, a 47-year-old suburban telemarketer who leaves his job to pursue a career as his drag queen alter ego, Mrs. Kasha Davis, a 1960s era housewife. The film explores how mainstream television has affected queer performance culture and the growing divide between members of the Rochester drag community who have been on TV and those who have not. The documentary features performances, interviews, and vérité footage of Ed and other drag queens, including Darienne Lake, Pandora Boxx, Bianca Del Rio, and Tatianna, as well as Ed's husband Steven Levins (aka Mr. Davis). The film culminates in Ed returning to his home in Rochester and creating Imagination Station (a new variety show for children), becoming the queer role model for kids that he never had growing up.
