...Stephen Fry comes across surprisingly right, cutting a flamboyant but stressed figure as the great Oscar Wilde. He is impressive and moving in this account of Wilde's rise and ruin.

Wilde is a movie that tells the story of Oscar Wilde, a brilliant and eccentric poet, playwright, and First Modern Man. The film opens with Wilde's visit to Leadville, Colorado, where he regales local silver miners with tales of Renaissance Renaissance silversmith Benvenuto Cellini during his lecture tour of the United States. He then returns to London, marries Constance Lloyd, has two sons with her, and hosts a young Canadian named Robbie Ross who seduces him. Wilde then re-encounters the dashingly handsome and foppish poet Lord Alfred "Bosie" Douglas with whom he falls into passionate love affair marred only by Bosie’s frequent infidelity with rent boys while Wilde plays the role of voyeur. Bosie’s father, The Marquess of Queensberry violently objects to his son’s relationship with Wilde and exposes his homosexuality after which Wilde is tried and sentenced to two years’ hard labor. After prison, Wilde is released and goes straight into exile, carrying the manuscript of De Profundis. He spends the rest of his life abroad, eventually meeting up again with Douglas. The movie ends with Wilde's death in Paris in 1900.
