What is The Children of Huang Shi about? Toggle content

During the Japanese occupation of China in 1937, a young British journalist named George Hogg (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) sneaks into Nanjing to report on the atrocities being committed. He witnesses and photographs the massacre of Chinese refugees by Japanese soldiers, but is captured and nearly executed himself. He is saved by Chen Hansheng (Chow Yun-fat), a Chinese communist resistance fighter, who brings him to an orphanage housing 56 young boys. Hogg is initially reluctant to stay, but Lee Pearson (Radha Mitchell), a US nurse who runs the orphanage, convinces him to help her care for the boys. When Lee leaves for two months, Hogg takes responsibility for the children and learns what it means to be a father figure. As the Japanese army approaches, Hogg decides to lead the children on a dangerous journey across the country to safety, facing numerous obstacles along the way. Based on real events, the film shows how Hogg's experiences change him and teach him the importance of responsibility, courage, and sacrifice.
