In the 1930s, jazz guitarist Emmet Ray's meteoric rise to fame was only rivaled by his equally swift descent into personal and professional turmoil. Despite his remarkable talent, Ray's arrogance, alcoholism, womanizing, and penchant for shooting rats and watching trains spin out of control, threaten to ruin his life and career. Ray idolizes Django Reinhardt, but his fixation on the legendary guitarist only serves to fuel his own insecurities and fragile ego. When he meets Hattie, a mute laundress who becomes the love of his life, Ray is torn between his passion for music and his inability to commit to a relationship. As Ray's world begins to crumble, he must confront the harsh reality of his own shortcomings and the true cost of greatness. Will he find redemption and acceptance, or will he continue to spiral downwards into his own bitter sweet and lowdown existence?
