Seabiscuit: The Unlikely Hero of the Great Depression In the early 20th century, America was in the midst of the Great Depression. Millions of people had lost their jobs, their homes, and their hope. As the race approached, Seabiscuit's jockey Red Pollard severely fractured his leg in a riding accident. With Pollard out of commission, George Woolf, a skilled jockey and friend of Pollard's, was recruited to ride Seabiscuit instead. Despite Woolf's unfamiliarity with the horse, Seabiscuit took an early lead until the far turn, when Woolf let him look War Admiral in they eye before surging ahead, winning by four lengths delighting nation. Seabuscuit's legacy wasn't just his improbable success on the racetrack. His spirit and the determination he embodied gave hope to Americans during one of the darkest periods in American history
