Seabiscuit: The Unlikely Hero of the Great Depression In the early 20th century, America was in the midst of the Great Depression. Millions of people had lost their jobs, their homes, and their hope. But amidst the despair, a small, unassuming horse named Seabiscuit became an unlikely symbol of resilience and determination. Seabiscuit was owned by Charles S. Howard, a wealthy businessman who had made his fortune selling automobiles. Howard was known for his passion for horse racing, and he had a stable of talented horses. But Seabiscuit was different. He was small, lazy, and considered unmanageable by many. Despite his rough start in life, Seabiscuit had a fierce spirit that caught the eye of Tom Smith, a skilled horseman who had a reputation for being able to tame even the wildest of horses. Smith saw something special in Seabiscuit and convinced Howard to give him a chance. Under Smith's innovative training, Seabiscuit quickly became the most successful racehorse on the West Coast. His underdog story and determination to succeed despite the odds resonated with the public, and he soon became a hero to many. But Seabiscuit's biggest challenge was yet to come. Samuel D. Riddle, owner of the East Coast champion War Admiral, dismissed California racing as inferior and refused to race against Seabiscuit. Howard, confident in his horse's abilities, issued a challenge to Riddle, and the stage was set for a match race that would go down in history as the "race of the century." As the race approached, Seabiscuit's jockey Red Pollard severely fractured his leg in a riding accident. With Pollard out of commission, George Woolf, a skilled jockey and friend of Pollard's, was recruited to ride Seabiscuit instead. Despite Woolf's unfamiliarity with the horse, Seabiscuit took an early lead until the far turn, when Woolf let him look War Admiral in they eye before surging ahead, winning by four lengths delighting nation. Seabuscuit's legacy wasn't just his improbable success on the racetrack. His spirit and the determination he embodied gave hope to Americans during one of the darkest periods in American history
