Qala

Qala is a rising singer in the 1940s who is haunted by her past and struggles with the pressure of success. Her mother, Urmila, is a domineering figure who pushes Qala to succeed but also resents her for it. Qala's brother died at birth, and she is haunted by visions of him accusing her of taking what is rightfully his. She seduces a music producer to get a chance at recording a song, but her mother finds out and forbids her from coming back home. Qala leaves for Calcutta and eventually rises to fame as a singer, but her past continues to haunt her. She attempts to kill herself but ultimately dies by suicide. The movie explores themes of sibling rivalry, mothers and daughters, and the high cost of success.
