Første og bedste film i Seidl's 'paradis-trilogi'.... kan godt ses uafhængigt af de to næste i rækken. Men hård film, på samme måde som en Von Trier film er hård.

What is Paradise: Love about? Toggle content

Paradise: Love, an Austrian drama film directed by Ulrich Seidl, tells the story of Teresa (Margarethe Tiesel), a middle-aged woman who embarks on a journey to Kenya as a sex tourist. She joins a group of other European women who seek out African boys selling love to earn a living. In this exotic paradise, Teresa searches for love and attention but is met with exploitation and objectification. She encounters men who profess their love for her, but their true intentions are revealed when they demand money from her. Teresa's relationships with these men are brief and shallow, and she finds herself constantly giving them money, only to realize that their interest in her is purely financial. She becomes increasingly isolated and lonely, unable to connect with her daughter back in Austria and struggling to find meaningful connections with the people around her. Despite the idyllic setting, the film reveals the darker side of sex tourism and the exploitation of African men by European women. The men are seen as commodities, objects to be used for the women's sexual gratification and monetary gain. The film raises questions about the power dynamics at play in these relationships and the impact of colonialism and imperialism on the sexual politics of tourism. Through Teresa's journey, Paradise: Love challenges viewers to confront their own preconceptions about love, desire, and power. It offers a critical commentary on the ways in which tourism can perpetuate systemic inequalities and reinforce harmful stereotypes about race, gender, and sexuality. Ultimately, the film suggests that true love may be elusive in a world where people are objectified for their bodies and valued only for their material possessions.
