What is Manon of the Spring about?
Manon des Sources (1986) is a French drama film directed by Claude Berri. It is the sequel to Jean de Florette, and continues the story of Manon, the daughter of Jean, who seeks revenge against the men who caused her father's downfall and death. Manon, played by Emmanuelle Béart, is now a beautiful young shepherdess living in the countryside of Provence. She learns that Ugolin Soubeyran, played by Daniel Auteuil, and his uncle César Soubeyran, played by Yves Montand, were responsible for her father's death and the theft of the spring that supplied water to the village. Manon publicly accuses Ugolin and César of the crime, and the villagers, who had remained silent for years, admit their own complicity. Ugolin commits suicide, and César, devastated by the loss of his nephew and the revelation that Jean was his son, dies quietly in his sleep. The film follows Manon's journey to avenge her father's death and find justice, as well as her romance with Bernard, a handsome schoolteacher. The film was well-received critically and commercially; it won several awards, including the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language, and became one of France's most successful films ever made.
