The script is peppered with in-jokes. Cleese's character is called Archie Leach, Cary Grant's real name, as both actors share the dubious honour of being born in Weston-super-Mare.

A Fish Called Wanda is a comedy film that follows the story of a group of thieves who plan and execute a heist of a valuable collection of diamonds in London. The gang includes George, the mastermind, Ken, an animal lover with a stutter, Wanda, a con artist and Otto, a volatile anglophobe. The heist is successful, but things quickly go awry when Wanda and Otto betray George to the police and he is arrested. The remaining trio then tries to retrieve the hidden loot but it has vanished. However, their liaisons are continuously interrupted by Otto's jealousy.
