In a world where spirits roam freely, a high school student named Kimihiro Watanuki can see them. Plagued by their constant presence, Watanuki stumbles upon a mysterious shop that grants wishes. The shop's owner, Yūko Ichihara, offers to rid Watanuki of his ability to see spirits, but at a price. He must work for Yūko as her temporary, part-time cook and housekeeper until the value of his work equals the value of his wish. As Watanuki becomes embroiled in Yūko's strange and supernatural world, he learns not only about the magic surrounding him but also about himself.
