In the spring of 1971, Professor Johanna returns to her native Iceland from Paris to bury her father. She's also seeking a job at the university, but her feminist views on gender don't sit well with the board. Instead, she gets a chance to finish her father's life's work: deciphering the medieval manuscript, the Flatey Book, which holds the key to a centuries-old mystery. But when a Danish handwriting expert is found murdered and her violent ex-husband is sent to investigate, Johanna's quest for answers becomes a dangerous game of cat and mouse.
