Episode 1
46min - Polly Bevan is a loyal wife, devoted mother and part time hairdresser. Finding her fifteen-year-old daughter, Leona, in bed with a young man she promptly sends him out of the window so that her husband, Leader of the Council and local big-wig, Iwan, doesn’t find out. It’s St David’s day and the whole of Gylngolau is gathered for a fun run. Iwan gives a speech to the crowd celebrating the town and its bright future, symbolised by the redevelopment of the old steelworks, which will bring a thousand much needed jobs. Little does he know that his own daughter and her friends have broken onto the site, sneaking past site foreman, Alan Kethin, to vandalise it. Shortly after the runners set off they hear an explosion. Rushing to the site, Polly and her friends, Angela, Greta and Debbie (site foreman Alan’s wife) watch as the building comes down. When Angela gets a call from her daughter, Mia, their suspicions are confirmed that their daughters are all inside. Emergency services arrive as the families watch on, not knowing whether their children are alive. Inside we see that Alan, and another man, Martin, are trying to pull the teenagers from the rubble. Martin carries Leona through the site as a second collapses brings the building down around them. She can hear her friend, Mia, screaming for help. The accident is national news and in London word has reached the offices of the construction company, Kallbridge Developments. Senior Vice President, and project manager, Harriet Paulsen springs into action. Against her superiors’ advice she decides to go to Glyngolau and show her face. As the rescue operation continues the families are desperate. Debbie, who is deaf, bursts through the perimeter to search for her husband in his site office but is dragged away by firemen. As the crowd’s distress grows It falls to Polly to calm them down so emergency services can do their jobs. Hours pass with no progress. Just as Harriet arrives at the site it collapses again. Polly sees Harriet arrive and, news cameras watching on, launches into a tirade against her, accusing her of carrying out the construction on the cheap. She’s interrupted by screaming as the families see bodies being pulled from the site. Some taken into ambulances. Some already in body bags. In the hospital hours later, the families are at their wits’ end. Greta and Angela are both called away to receive news while Polly waits, Iwan nowhere to be seen. Elsewhere Debbie cuts a desperate figure as she wanders the corridors searching for anyone with news of her husband. Finally, Polly is approached by neurosurgeon, Dr Whittaker. She assumes the worst and is about to break down when he gives her the good news. Leona has pulled through, just. As has the mysterious man who saved her, Martin. Polly searches out Martin in recovery to thank him and there’s an immediate connection between them.
