Hashiba Sora liegt im Krankenhaus, seitdem er bei einem Unfall aus dem Fenster der Schule gefallen war. Nachdem er wieder im Studentenheim ist, wird er nachts von einem Jungen überfallen, der sich als „Ran“ bezeichnet und Sora bittet, „Yoru“ rauszulassen. Daraufhin läuft Sora panisch davon. Am nächsten Morgen stellt sich heraus, dass es sich bei dem mysteriösen „Ran“ um Fujimori Sunao handelt - einen Sandkastenfreund Soras, an den dieser sich allerdings nicht erinnern kann. Da dies Sunao sehr aufregt, klärt Honji Matsuri, ebenfalls ein alter Freund Soras, Sunao über Soras Erinnerungsvermögen auf. Denn dieses weist erhebliche Lücken auf, vor allem die Kindheit betreffend. Erst im weiteren Verlauf der Geschichte stellt sich heraus, was der Grund für Soras Vergessen ist und was „Ran“ und „Yoru“ damit zu tun haben.
