Our Friends in the North

Our Friends in the North is a British television series that explores the lives of four friends from Newcastle upon Tyne, from the 1960s to the 1990s. The show follows the friends' personal and professional struggles as they navigate the changing political and social landscape of Britain. The series begins in 1964 with Nicky Hutchinson, a university student who becomes involved in the U.S. civil rights movement. His friends, Geordie and Tosker, are eager to start a band, but Nicky is more interested in politics and volunteers for a local politician. Tosker takes advantage of Nicky's absence and successfully woos Nicky's girlfriend, Mary. As the series progresses, the friends' lives take different paths. Nicky becomes embroiled in political corruption and extremism, while Geordie gets involved in organized crime and Mary struggles with her marriage and advocacy work. The show jumps forward in time to 1984, where Nicky is covering the miners' strike and rekindles his relationship with Mary. Tosker has made his fortune as a slum landlord, but his marriage is strained due to his infidelity. The series ends in 1995 with Nicky returning to Newcastle for Florrie's funeral after living in Italy. Tosker and Elaine have rebuilt their business and are set to open a new floating nightclub; Geordie has escaped from prison and approaches the club looking for work but is recognized by Elaine; Nicky tries to convince Felix that his life wasn't a failure, but Felix is too far gone with Alzheimer's disease to understand. Our Friends In The North explores themes such as politics, friendship, love, loyalty , tribulation, strife , tragedy among others. The show features an ensemble cast with Christopher Eccleston, Mark Strong, Gina McKee, Daniel Craig, Peter Vaughan, Freda Dowie, David Bradley among others. It was nominated for several BAFTA awards including Best Drama Series and Best Actor.
