In 18th century Portugal, a lavish and corrupt nobility stands accused of plotting the assassination of King Joseph. Amidst political turmoil and economic crisis, the king's mistress, the Marquesa de Távora, is implicated in the attempt on his life. The minister, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, seizes the opportunity to rid the kingdom of the old nobility and their Jesuit allies, and constructs a sham trial based on fabricated evidence. The accused face a brutal fate, but the question of their guilt remains. This historical drama series explores the dark underbelly of power struggles and the true cost of political ambition.
