In the small town of San Andrés, two families, the Valdés and the Ramírez, have been sworn enemies for generations. The Ramírez family, led by the ruthless and powerful Justo Ramírez, owns the prosperous "Piedras Grandes" hacienda, while the Valdés family, led by Rigoberto Valdés, struggles to make ends meet on their small property, which is irrigated by a beautiful spring of water that the Ramírez family covets. The hatred between the families is fueled by Justo's adulterous relationship with Francisca Rivero, Rigoberto's wife, and their secrets are kept hidden from the rest of the town. Despite their families' animosity towards each other, Alfonsina Valdés and Alejandro Ramírez, who were born at the same time, are drawn to each other, but their love is complicated by their families' long-standing feud.
