Baumbach can be a marvelous, unsparing reporter on a certain slice of upper-middle-class to wealthy America, and he brings that skill to bear here in the scenes of Tracy feeling out of her element.

...the pace...speeds up – and finally we’re riding a wave of zane, with crowds of subsidiary characters cheerfully welcomed on to the screen and given entertaining and amusing things to say and do.

Few filmmakers are as good on characters trying to find their place in the world and, in Baumbach’s hands, the result is smart, funny and breathless.

This movie is head-spinningly chic, certainly (...) but it’s also a pointed commentary on people desperate to impress.

When Gerwig is in the frame, the film has an antic – sometimes frantic – screwball vibe, mellowed only by the terrific, Eighties-slanting synth score by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips.
