Every now and then, a comedy rolls around that is delightfully unafraid of utter ridiculousness—of pushing buttons and boundaries until it’s blue in the face.

A knockout comedy about a queer fight club.

This is a film with barely a sincere moment in its 91-minute runtime, instead focusing on building an off-kilter, heightened high-school world, and having a helluva time playing with it.

This is a queer teen sex comedy that wears its influences on its sleeve, yet still resembles no other film.

I could say Bottoms shines because it nods to nostalgia but feels totally of our time, or expertly inhabits the buddy comedy genre formula while providing its own absurdist twist – but most importantly, it is simply, joyfully, ridonkulous.

They have every right to fail, be crass, make crude jokes, and shed blood. Seligman and Sennott are all in on the joke, right down to the end credits blooper reel.

A through-the-looking-glass cult comedy in the making.
