A 10-year-old boy, T.S. Spivet, living on a ranch in Montana with his eccentric family, receives a prestigious award from the Smithsonian Institution for his invention of a perpetual motion machine. Despite his family's ignorance of his talent, T.S. decides to travel alone to Washington D.C. by freight train to receive the award and deliver a speech, unaware that the museum director believes he is an adult. Along the way, he meets a hobo who shares a whimsical story and faces challenges as he tries to reach his destination while keeping his true identity hidden from the public and railway staff who become suspicious of him as they realize that the prize-winner is just a child.
