In the midst of World War II, a 15-year-old girl named Leyna struggles to find her place in Nazi Germany, where her mixed race makes her an outcast. She meets Lutz, a member of the Hitler Youth who is torn between his loyalty to the regime and his growing feelings for Leyna. Despite the danger, they begin a secret romance that puts their lives at risk. As the war rages on and the Nazi regime becomes more oppressive, Leyna becomes pregnant and is sent to a labor camp. Lutz is stationed at the same camp and tries to help Leyna escape, but they are eventually separated and Lutz is killed by his own father. Leyna manages to survive and is reunited with her mother and brother in an American displacement camp.
