What is Underground about? 
Underground, a film by Emir Kusturica, tells the story of two friends, Marko and Blacky, who survive the Nazi occupation of Belgrade during World War II by living in an underground cellar. Marko, a cunning opportunist, becomes the leader of a communist resistance group and organized the manufacturing of weapons for the war effort. Blacky, an idealistic Partisan fighter, is forced to hide in the cellar for decades after being wounded in battle. Meanwhile, their friend Natalija switches loyalties between them and an German officer Franz. As the war ends and Yugoslavia descends into civil war in 1990's , Marko continues to exploit his position as he becomes a wealthy arms dealer while claiming that he's still fighting against Germans for decades until his death. Blacky emerges from underground with his son Jovan but soon they encounter danger from both Republic Guard and loose talk about their true identity outside leading to Jovan's death while trying to escape when they mistakenly believe there's still ongoing conflict between Germans and Partisans.. The film explores themes of survival, loyalty ,and deception through its intricate plot that spans over five decades .With its dark humor , unique characters., metaphors ,and symbolism throughout Underground delves deep into human nature during times political turmoil
