Set in a Kurdish refugee camp on the Iraq-Turkey border, Turtles Can Fly tells the story of a group of children who are struggling to survive on the eve of the US invasion of Iraq. Thirteen-year-old Soran, known as Kak Satellite, is a charismatic and resourceful leader who has made it his mission to install antennas and dishes for the villagers, desperate for news of Saddam Hussein's regime. Despite the danger, Kak Satellite and the other children are determined to clear minefields, trading undetonated mines for valuable goods. When a new family arrives at the camp, Kak Satellite falls for the orphaned Agrin and tries to win her over, but her past traumas make it difficult for her to accept his affections. As the war approaches, Agrin's struggles become more and more desperate, leading to a tragic series of events that will change the lives of everyone in the camp forever.
