Steve Lopez, a journalist for the Los Angeles Times, discovers Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless man with schizophrenia, playing the violin on the streets. Ayers has a troubled past, having attended Juilliard but dropping out due to his mental health. Lopez writes an article about Ayers, which sparks a chain of events that leads to Ayers being given a cello and later performing for the homeless. However, Ayers' mental health issues persist, causing him to lash out and refuse help. Eventually, Lopez convinces Ayers to move into an apartment and receive treatment. Through Lopez's articles, Ayers gains fame and is given the opportunity to perform a recital, but his struggles with schizophrenia continue to affect his life.
