En los últimos días de la Guerra Civil estadounidense, Will, un adolescente huérfano, emprenderá junto a su perverso tío un viaje hacia el norte para capturar a Nate, un fugitivo de la justicia. El objetivo es entregarlo a una banda de despiadados cazadores de recompensas. Tras localizarlo, los tres emprenden un viaje campo a través entre los coletazos finales de la guerra. En su periplo el muchacho irá perdiendo los recelos que lo alejaban de Nate, dando paso a unos lazos paterno-filiales que le harán dudar sobre la esencia de su misión. A Will se le planteará un dilema ético. Deberá decidirse entre la lealtad y sus sentimientos.
