The Professional

The Professional follows the story of Teodor "Teja" Kraj, a former university professor and bohemian writer who is now a manager of a large publishing house. One day, a mysterious man named Luka Laban enters Teja's office and reveals that he has been following Teja for ten years, gathering information about his life and movements. Luka explains that he was once an officer of the State Security, but was retired after the 5 October Overthrow. He then began working as a cab driver and wrote four books containing stories of his observations of Teja. As the film progresses, we learn that Luka has been present at many significant moments in Teja's life, often in disguise. He attended Teja's speeches, observed him from a distance, and even saved his life on several occasions. Through their conversations, we see flashbacks of these events and learn more about Luka's past and his motivations for following Teja. The film explores themes of surveillance, control, and the impact of political turmoil on individual lives. Despite the seriousness of these themes, the film also has its share of humorous moments and lighthearted exchanges between Teja and Luka. As tensions rise and the characters face dangerous situations together, their bond deepens beyond their mutual distrust. The Professional is a unique and thought-provoking drama that offers a fresh perspective on the history of Serbia during the Milošević regime.
