The Kid Detective: A Once-Celebrated Sleuth Solves a Brutal Murder In the small town of Willowbrook, a former child detective named Abe Applebaum is struggling to find purpose in his adult life. Known locally for solving minor mysteries and crimes as a kid, Abe now spends his days drowning in alcohol and drugs to cope with his failures. When an orphaned high school student named Caroline approaches him for help investigating the murder of her boyfriend, Patrick Chang, Abe sees this as a chance to prove himself and takes on the case. As they delve deeper into the investigation, they uncover several secrets about Patrick's life that lead them down a dangerous path. They learn about his involvement in drug dealing and affair with an older girl named Melody, but they also discover that Calvin, Patrick's friend, is in love with Caroline and resents their relationship. Despite Abe's clumsy style of work leading to mishaps such as angering Patrick's father and getting arrested for sneaking into Calvin's house, he eventually reaches a breakthrough. He realizes that origami roses given to Caroline are identical to ones sent to Gracie before her disappearance years ago. This leads him to suspect Principal Erwin of both Gracie's kidnapping and Patrick's murder. Abe confronts Principal Erwin at his home and reveals what he has learned: Erwin had become obsessed with Gracie and plotted her kidnap years ago while testing Abe by stealing school fundraiser money; when Abe failed to solve it correctly, Erwin carried out his plan without hesitation after finding out Caroline (whom he fathered through rape) was left abandoned at church after birth by him following the deed.. With all crimes revealed—including killing Patrick upon mistaking lewd pics found featuring Melody for ones depicting Caroline—Erwin becomes exposed...
