The Horde

In the 14th century, a powerful Tatar leader, Jani Beg, takes control after killing his brother. His mother, Taidula, becomes blind and Jani Beg searches for a healer to cure her. He turns to Alexius, a renowned Metropolitan of Moscow and Wonderworker, who is reluctant to help but is eventually convinced. Alexius travels to Jani Beg's palace, accompanied by his loyal keleynik Fedka, but their attempts to cure Taidula's blindness fail. Alexius is banished and Fedka is taken as a slave. However, after a period of suffering and spiritual growth, Alexius is able to heal Taidula's blindness and returns to Moscow with Fedka. Shortly after, Jani Beg is assassinated by his own son.
